Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth got 44 of its 97 points from under the basket as the Bulldogs out-shot Upper Iowa University 97-81 in an interdivisional Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match-up on Friday evening.
Usually known for quick shooting on the outside, UMD (11-12, 8-11 NSIC) took to the inside with seniors
Katrina Newman and
Hannah Rutten and sophomore
Taylor Meyer all putting up big numbers for the Bulldogs. Newman led all scorers with 23 points on the night while also hauling in a game-high eight rebounds. The Peacocks took an early five-point lead four minutes into the contest, but UMD quickly reversed fortune and led by as much as seven in the opening frame, but Upper Iowa had a comeback of their own and the two teams went to the locker room knotted at 45-all.
UMD slowly pulled away in the early going of the second half and held off the Peacocks, who shot just 42.9 percent in the second half, compared to 55.2 for UMD. Rutten came off the bench for UMD and netted 13 of her 19 points in the second half. Also bringing big second halves were guards
Jessica Newman and
Danielle Flood, who had 10 points each. Flood finished third on UMD with 16 points, tied with Meyer, while Newman added 15.
The Bulldogs shot just seven times from beyond the arc, but were a perfect 2-for-2 in the second half. UMD also made good on its trips to the free-throw line, shooting 34-of-46 (73.9 percent) from the charity stripe. Altogether, the Bulldogs shot 49.2 percent compared to 45.8 for Upper Iowa. UMD forced 18 Peacock turnovers on the night.
The interdivisional action continues tomorrow afternoon for UMD when the Bulldogs take on Winona State University in another NSIC match-up. Opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m. in Winona.
