Box Score Winona State University needed every shot in the second half to down the injury-riddled University of Minnesota Duluth 68-64 in a tough Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference interdivisional match on Saturday night.
Head coach
Matt Bowen tweeted it out before the game: the injury woes continued for UMD last night and just nine players were available for the Bulldogs in Winona. They came out swinging though, and after an initial 13-4 lead for Winona State, UMD bounced back to take the lead 20-19 on a
Junior Coleman three-pointer. The junior guard had 17 points in the opening half as the Bulldogs took a 42-36 lead to the locker room, but it was senior guard
Jordan Reetz who led the way with 19 points.
The Warriors opened the second half on a 15-6 run and held on to a six-point margin for much of the second half. UMD trimmed the lead to four out of the final media timeout just past the five-minute mark, and Reetz drew a foul with just over a minute to go, making both free throws to put the Bulldogs within a shot. A three-pointer in the final second was no good, and the Warriors got a pair of free throws from Kellen Taylor to close out the game.
Reetz finished with a game-high 27 points, while Coleman cooled in the second half to finish with 22 on the night. Isaiah Gray had a team-high 16 points off the bench for Winona State, while post man Kyle Bauman added 15. Junior guard
Reece Zoelle just missed a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds and nine points on the night. The Bulldogs shot 45.3 percent on the night compared to just 41.9 percent for Winona State. The Warriors went 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half and had 17 points off 12 UMD turnovers.
The Bulldogs will close out the regular season at home next weekend against Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota, Crookston. UMD and BSU will tip off the final weekend of NSIC play at 8:00 p.m. Friday night, following the women's contest.
