WEEKEND WRAP UP: TWO PROVISIONAL MARKS, TWO SCHOOL RECORDS AND SIX TITLES

Dan Nielsen finished seventh in the 3,000-meter run at Saturday's MSU Open

Three different meets in two days resulted in two provisional-qualifying performances, two school-record efforts, and six individual titles for the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The Bulldogs' weekend kicked off Friday at the St. Thomas University Showcase in St. Paul, Minn., where junior Nick Moran placed fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.09 meters and qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. On Saturday, a small group of Bulldogs took part in the Minnesota State University Open in Mankato, Minn. Junior Phil d'Entremont captured top honors in the 600-meter run, finishing in a school-record time of 1:21.76, while the distance medley relay unit of senior Tyler Stevens, D'Entremont, junior Chris Wilson and senior Cole Toepfer attained a provisional-qualifying mark of 10:00.03, and another school record.

"I've been training really hard recently, and it's nice to see my work pay off," said d'Entremont, whose time was .07 seconds faster than the previous school mark set by Kris Brevik back in 1998. "Going to Mankato this weekend exposed me to some great talent which really pushed me to succeed."

Also on Saturday just across the state line at the University of Wisconsin-Superior's Yellowjacket Open, UMD took first place in six different events. The group of winners included senior Mitch Zuidema in the 5,000-meter run (16:01.60), junior Justin Adams in the 400-meter dash (52.08), freshman Boston Braack in the 600-meter run (1:26.46), freshman Jason Lilja in the long jump (6.27 meters), sophomore Appo Agbamu in the shot put (15.21 meters) and Moran in the weight throw (16.82 meters).

A select number of Bulldogs will take part in  the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Heptathlon Championships in Mankato, Minn. this Sunday and Monday. Next up for the entire UMD team is the Snowshoe Open on Friday (Feb. 21) on the campus of the University of Minnesota and the Tostrud Open in Northfield, Minn., the following day
