BULLDOGS RUN AWAY FROM WINONA STATE IN FIRST HALF TO SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES

Box Score The University of Minnesota Duluth jumped all over Winona State University in the opening half and held on to sweep a weekend Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference interdivisional series against NSIC South foes with a 67-52 win in Winona on Saturday night.

The opening half was all UMD (12-12, 9-11 NSIC) as the Bulldogs exploded for 40 points on 15-of-30 shooting, making six three-pointers after having taken just seven three-point shots last night. Winona State () was 0-for-10 from beyond the arc and shot just 20.8 percent overall. Senior center Hannah Rutten had a game-high 11 points at the half while hauling in seven rebounds, six on the defensive end. Senior forward Katrina Newman and junior guard Danielle Flood each hit double figures in the first half, as well.

The Warriors forced a few early turnovers out of the break, but early foul trouble put them back on their heels. UMD led by as much as 30 but kept about a 25-point cushion throughout the second half. Winona State trimmed it late against the Bulldogs' reserves, but UMD held on to take it by the final 15-point edge.

Rutten had a game-high 19 points off the bench while also collecting 12 rebounds on the night. Katrina Newman finished with 14, Flood with 13, and Jessica Newman came alive in the second half to also crack double figures. For the elder Newman, the 14 points brought her to 1,463 for her career, moving her past Sara Belanger ('96) for sixth in career scoring at UMD, where she will likely end her career with nearly 200 points between her and fifth-place all-time.

Guard Abby Busch had ten second-half points to finish with 16 to lead the way for Winona State. Winona would actually pull ahead in shooting percentage with a strong second half, finishing at 40.4 percent while UMD finished at 38.3. The Bulldogs got the edge in rebounds, 43-to-27 while also forcing 15 turnovers.

UMD is back at Romano Gym next weekend in the regular season finale, playing host to Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Opening tip between the Bulldogs and Beavers is set for 6:00 p.m. on Friday night.
