BULLDOGS GET OFFENSIVE ON DAY ONE OF MINNESOTA DULUTH INVITATIONAL

Box Score 12 runs on eight hits is not a bad stat line to have for a game. The University of Minnesota Duluth offense decided to unleashed that fury all in the opening inning of the first day of the Minnesota Duluth Invitational against Lincoln University Sunday.

The Bulldogs took a commanding 12-0 lead after the first frame and coasted to a 13-5 victory over the Blue Tigers.

Headlining the the inning was senior captain Megan Mullen, who made her first start in the field after recovering from an injury. Mullen cleared the bases with a blast to left field. Junior infielder Jordan Rice initiated the rally with her second career triple to score Sami Schnyder and Ashley SchillingSchnyder, the Waconia, Minn. native, went 2-for-2 and boosted her season average up to .481. Schnyder was one of four UMD players to collect a pair of hits. Mullen, freshman outfielder Hailey Lundquist, sophomore designated hitter Cayli Sadler all tallied two hits.

Freshman pitcher Sam Hartmann started in the circle throwing two and one-third innings before handing the ball off to fellow freshman hurler Mariah Schultz with the lead safe in hand. Schultz pitched the final two and two-thirds innings in only her second apperance of the year.

The Bulldogs' other game today versus No. 14 Fort Hays State University was hauled after the game was called due to time limit with the facility scheduling. 

The game was suspended in the top of the sixth inning with UMD holding a slim 3-2 margin over the Tigers.

Sadler got the nod to start the second game. Thru five innings thus far, the Brooklyn Park Minn. native has seven strikeouts and given up five hits. 

Trailing 1-0, Mullen tied the game in the bottom of the first with a ground-rule double. The Bulldogs took the lead in the third off a Rice double doen the left field line. Fort Hays State answered with a homer in the fourth then Schilling responded with a bomb of her own. Schilling, the product of Omaha, Neb., smashed the first pitch well over the left field wall to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth.

The action bewteen UMD and FHSU will pick back up tomorrow prior to their scheduled Day 2 start at 11 a.m. Additionally, the Bulldogs engage in a pair of games with the University of Mary at 9 a.m. and another showdown with Lincoln at 1 p.m.
