Rain turned a season-opening doubleheader into a single game for the University of Minnesota Duluth at the RussMatt Central Florida Invite, and Northwood (Mich.) University got the best of the Bulldogs 10-8 on Wednesday evening in Auburndale, Fla.

Sophomore lefty Bo Hellquist looked dominant on the mound in his five innings of work for UMD (0-1), tossing nine strikeouts without a walk, but six Bulldog errors proved the difference as the Timberwolves (5-5) plated eight unearned runs against six UMD pitchers on the night, including a pair against Hellquist. On the other side, Andrew Joseph went eight strong for NU, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven before UMD plated six in the ninth inning off a trio of Timberwolves relievers.

NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Alex Wojciechowski (So./1B) had the lone hit of the first three innings, a double with two outs in the first. A pair of singles and two errors got the Wolverines on the board in the fourth and added another in the fifth thanks to a Dustin Lee double to lead 3-0. Freshman right fielder Grant Farley walked and scored in the Bulldog half of the fifth on an RBI single by senior outfielder Kellen McCoshen.

Northwood strung a pair of hits together to plate a run in the top of the sixth but UMD answered with three hits of its own, with freshman infielder Skyler Wenninger drove in sohomore Josh Denisen, pinch-running for designated hitter Tommy Bodeker. The Wolverines added six insurance runs in the final two innings against the Bulldog relief corps, and NU needed them all. Seven straight UMD batters reached to open the bottom of the ninth, highlighted by a Cody Aasen (Sr./OF) two-RBI double.43

UMD will be back at it bright and early tomorrow morning when they take on Ohio Dominican University at 9:30 a.m. CT.
