The University of Minnesota Duluth suffered a pair of setbacks when stepping into Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on day one of a four-game series with Wayne State College on Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb. The Wildcats edged the Bulldogs 2-0 in game one and 5-3 in game two.
Sophomore lefthander
Bo Hellquist (0-2) took the hard-luck loss in game one for UMD (4-8, 0-2 NSIC), tossing a complete game and allowing just one earned run while scattering five hits. Hellquist struck out four while wakling two. His mound foe, Eric Browning walked three and hit a batter, but was effectively wild, striking out 10 Bulldogs on the night and allowing just a pair of hits. Curtis Bussard came in in the seventh inning to collect his second save of the year, adding a pair of strikeouts of his own.
Wayne State (8-7, 2-0 NSIC) jumped out to a three-run lead in the third inning of game two, stringing together three hits including back-to-back doubles. The Bulldogs finally broke through in the fifth inning, plating a pair of runs on three hits, with sophomore third baseman
Jimmy Heck driving in sophomore catcher
Tyler Stein with a single before sophomore shortstop
Kyle Comer doubled in his partner from the left side of the infield.
Wayne State added a fourth run in the sixth inning before the Bulldogs pulled within one when senior left fielder
Cody Aasen slipped a single through the left side to score Comer. The Wildcats added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth before Bussard came in to shut the door for the second straight game in the ninth.
Wes Mleziva fell to 0-1 on the season despite striking out seven over seven innings of work, scattering six hits and a walk. Dylan McGill (2-1) earned his second win of the season for Wayne, striking out three and allowing just a pair of runs on five hits in six innings.
UMD returns to the diamond next Saturday and Sunday, taking on the nation's No. 2-ranked team in Minnesota State University. The series is tentatively scheduled to get underway at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in Mankato.
