No. 4 Minnesota State University earned a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victories over the University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, stealing the lead late in both games to down the Bulldogs in Mauston, Wis.
UMD falls to 4-10 (0-4 NSIC) after the day's games. Game one saw UMD unable to solve Minnesota State senior right hander Jason Hoppe, who scattered four hits and struck out seven batters in his complete game shutout. Sophomore lefthander
Bo Hellquist falls to 0-3 on the year, taking another tough-luck loss while striking out six in six innings, scattering four hits of his own while allowing a pair of walks. A fifth-inning homer off the bat of MSU senior first baseman Stetson Olson marked the difference in the game, as the two teams combined for just 13 baserunners in the game.
The Bulldogs scored first in game two, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when freshman right fielder
Matt Vogt continued his tear, doubling in sophomore first baseman
Alex Wojciechowski and senior
Cody Aasen. Minnesota State (17-4, 5-1 NSIC) answered back, again using the long ball as Todd Standish homered to make it 2-1. The two teams matched that output in the second inning with Wojciechowski singling in a pair of runs and Taylor Brandstad answering with and RBI in the bottom of the inning.
Brastad doubled in a run in the fourth inning, the final run the Mavericks would notch off UMD right-hander Wes Mleziva, who went seven innings, striking out six and allowing just five hits before giving way to the bullpen. UMD knocked senior righty Bryce Bellin out of the game after five innings when Vogt earned an RBI groundout to make it 5-3. Troubled struck the Bulldogs in the eighth inning when MSU scored five runs, but just two earned against UMD sophomore reliever
Ryan Lakin (0-2). Lakin's bad luck gave way to a win for Maverick freshman Trevor Patterson, his first of the season, as he tossed three shutout innings. Senior closer Chris Williams collected his fourth save of the year despite UMD scoring a ninth-inning run when Wojciechowski drove in sophomore shortstop
Kyle Comer on a groundout.
The two teams will meet again for a second double-dip tomorrow at Noon in Mauston, Wis., weather permitting. Stay tuned to the UMDBaseball twitter account for updates.
