The University of Minnesota Duluth could not catch a break on day two of a four-game series against No. 4 Minnesota State University Mankato as the Mavericks completed a sweep, taking the games 3-1 and 8-7 in Mauston, Wis. on Monday afternoon.

The early outing was almost a repeat of the first game of the series as UMD (4-12, 0-6 NSIC) struggled to make solid contact against Minnesota State starter T.J. Larson (3-1), who collected 10 strikeouts in his six innings of work. The Bulldogs scored their run in the sixth inning, when freshman rightfielder Matt Vogt continued his hot streak, singling home sophomore first baseman Alex Wojciechowski. Vogt would finish the series 5-for-15 (.333) with three doubles, four runs batted in, and a run scored.

MSU did its damage in the fourth and fifth innings, knocking UMD sophomore starter Spencer Diedrich (0-2) from the game after 4.1 innings, dropping in seven hits. Freshmen relievers Colton Sinning and Grant Farley came in and shutout the door over the final five outs, but the damage had been done and Mankato escaped with the game one win.

Minnesota State (19-4, 7-1 NSIC) took an early lead in the series finale, scoring single runs in the first three innings, before opening it up with four runs in the fourth, knocking UMD starter Chris Couilliard out of the game after surrending seven hits and four walks, though the defense did not help him out as MSU plated three unearned runs againt him on the day. The Bulldogs got on the board in the third with an RBI single by Wojciechowski, but it was the fifth inning when they made their noise.

Freshman infielder Brian Pierce walked to open up the fifth, with Wojciechowski singling behind him. Senior leftfielder Cody Aasen launched his first home run of the year. Vogt would follow that up with his third double of the series, and he was singled home by junior desginated hitter Joe Balestreri, who finished 3-for-3 with a walk on the afternoon. The 7-5 score held until the top of the eighth inning, when the Bulldogs struck for a pair of runs in unusual fashion, with pinch runner Josh Denisen scoring on a balk and pinch hitter Ryan Lakin driving home the game-tying score with a sacrifice fly.

With the game freshly tied, Minnesota State jumped on freshman reliever Kevin Stocke, with the first two hitters reaching in the bottom of the eighth inning. A sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout later put MSU up 8-7. After coming in to shut the door in the top of the eight, junior lefty Matt Geislinger would shut the door in the ninth for his first victory of the season. Geislinger had strikeouts for four of his five outs.

UMD is slated to return to the diamond for another road doubleheader on Wednesday against Concordia University, St. Paul. Opening pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. in St. Paul
