UMD NETS A SPLIT WITH CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL IN TUESDAY NON-CONFERENCE TWINBILL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Stellar performances by sophomore pitcher Cayli Sadler and senior outfielder Megan Mullen netted the University of Minnesota Duluth with a non-conference split over Concordia University, St. Paul at the West St. Paul Regional Athletic Center in West St. Paul, Minn. on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs, who have won eight of their past 11 games against the Golden Bears, took the first game 3-1 before falling 7-5 in the afternoon cap. With the split, UMD (9-5 overall) has now won 22 of their past 24 contests inside the West St. Paul dome dating back to last season, and is 31-5 indoors overall during that same timeframe.

Sadler threw a complete game giving up a single run while striking out seven en route to a 3-1 victory and came in to sub freshman pitcher Sam Hartmann the following game. The Maple Grove H.S. product tossed the last four innings, allowing two unearned runs, fanning eight more batters. In total, Sadler lowered her ERA to 2.15 by pitching 11 innings giving up three runs on nine hits while sending 15 Golden Bears back to the bench.

Meanwhile, Mullen provided the spark offensively, knocking a pair of balls out of the park. The Hermantown, Minn. native went 3-of-6 with a walk and drove in half of team's runs (4) to raise her batting average up 24 points to .368. Mullen is now second among her team in home runs and RBIs.

In the first game, the Bulldogs scored on three consecutive innings to lead 3-0. Sophomore outfielder Ashley Schilling started it off in the third with her sacrifice fly to left to score freshman Heather Woyak. Mullen added a solo bomb to right field in the fourth and junior infielder Jordan Rice sliced a double down the left field line to easily score sophomore infielder Sami Schnyder. Concordia finally tallied their only run in the fifth off a wicked infield chopper.

The tables flipped in the second game and defensive errors doomed UMD. The Golden Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead on an unearned run on an overthrow and two solo home runs. The Bulldogs answered back to tie it in the bottom of the third. Sophomore infielder Daylce Gustafson punched her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to lead off the inning. Mullen soon tied it a few batters later on her.

Concordia would regain the lead the next half inning but UMD would chip away at the two-run lead the next couple innings. Mullen trimmed the lead to one on a fielder's choice in the fourth and Rice, who paced UMD tallying four hits, answered the call the next inning jacking her conference-leading fifth home run of the year. However, Golden Bears' hurler Stepanie Kappes came in relief and sent down the order twice to pick up the save after Concordia scored on two unearned runs in the top of the sixth.

The Bulldogs will return the WSP dome once again next Tuesday, March 11 for another two-game set against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Minnesota State University Moorhead. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
