The University of Minnesota Duluth must have felt at home on the road, as the Bulldogs dropped 25 runs on the University of Sioux Falls in the opening doubleheader of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference four-game series on Friday afternoon.

UMD (10-19, 6-13 NSIC) took game one of the series, originally scheduled to take place in Duluth, by a 13-1 score on the strength of its bats and a strong outing by sophomore left-hander Bo Hellquist. The bats stayed alive in game two as the Bulldogs continued their offensive onslaught, downing Sioux Falls (15-22, 9-15 NSIC) by a 12-7 final

Technically the home team, UMD rallied for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run double by junior utility man John Meyer, who started in centerfield in the game. Hellquist (2-4) tossed six strong innings for UMD, scattering four hits and a walk, allowing just one run in the only inning he allowed more than a single baserunner, the top of the third.

The Bulldogs doubled their score to take an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore designated hitter Kyle Comer homered in his return to the starting line-up, while sophomore third baseman Jimmy Heck followed it with a two-run double of his own and then scored himself on a single by his left-side of the infield mate, freshman Brian Pierce. Pierce drove in two runs in the sixth inning to round out the scoring for UMD for a team-high three runs batted in game one.

The ball started to fly in game two as the Bulldogs crushed three home runs, including a second of the day by Comer, out-slugging the Cougars 12-7. Freshman outfielder Grant Farley got the longballs started with a three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting the Bulldogs ahead 6-5, while Comer and Meyer continued their assault of USF pitching with shots in the seventh and eighth innings that put the game on ice for UMD.

The Bulldogs once again struck first when senior Cody Aasen doubled home a run in the first before a pair of sacrifice flies put UMD up 3-0. The Cougars did their damage over the next three innings, plating five runs but just three earned against Bulldog senior right-hander Max Ryan (2-2). Ryan would tossed five innings, striking out seven with eight hits and a walk.

Along with the big flies, Heck added another RBI double and UMD scored on a bases-loaded walk by Farley and a Sioux Falls throwing error in the seventh inning. USF would add a long-fly of its own in the ninth inning against reliever Ryan Lakin, but it was too late as the Bulldogs held on to complete the sweep. Though not lighting up the scoreboard on the day, junior catcher Beau Goff had the most efficient outing for UMD, finishing Friday's games with six hits in eight at-bat and four runs scored on the afternoon.

The teams will continue the series on Saturday with another twinbill, scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. opening pitch in Sioux Falls.
