The balls stayed in the ballpark today as the University of Minnesota Duluth's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference series with Northern State University shifted to Aberdeen, S.D., but UMD could not overcome the Wolves' hard-hitting offense on day two.
Northern State (25-14, 18-10 NSIC) took an early five-run lead, and then piled on late in game one to take down UMD (14-23, 10-17) 14-4 in game one. The series finale was a close one, but also saw NSU escape with a 3-1 comeback victory.
A pair of UMD errors hurt sophomore
Ryan Lakin's (0-5) odds on the mound in game one, but the Wolves scored just two unearned runs and slugged 20 hits, including six doubles in the opener. NSU had five hits including a bases-clearing double to score five runs in the top of the second, but UMD answered with a run in their half of the inning as sophomore third baseman
Jimmy Heck drove in his left side of the infield mate, sophomore shortstop
Kyle Comer on an infield single, but the Wolves were quick to add on, scoring multiple runs in the fourth through seventh innings. UMD added three more in the bottom of the fourth, but that was it for Bulldogs. Freshman
Matt Vogt lifted a two-run double to right, plating Heck and Comer before coming around on a fielding error by the Wolves' third baseman. Northern State's ace Cody Johns (5-2) struck out three Bulldogs in his four innings. UMD scored just three earned runs against him despite having nine hits.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start for senior starter
Chris Couillard (2-1) with as Comer drove in a run in the bottom of the first inning, but Northern State's senior right-hander Kris Keating scattered seven hits over six innings of work to hold UMD scoreless the rest of the way as the Wolves scored three unanswered with an RBI groundout in the fourth, and a pair of errors costing the Bulldogs a pair of runs in the fifth, ending Couillard's day with five innings pitched and three runs allowed on just two hits. UMD threatened again in the eighth, but senior Colton Boucher came in and shut the door for NSU, picking up his second save of the year.
Minnesota Duluth will close out the NSIC regular season schedule with a pair of road series this week, traveling to Winona State University on Wednesday for an afternoon doubleheader, beginning at 1:30 p.m. before heading to the University of Minnesota, Crookston to close out the regular season with a four-game set on Friday and Saturday.
