The University of Minnesota Duluth offense gave its staff ace plenty of run support in an 8-0 victory in game one of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader against Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday afternoon, but the Mustangs got the Bulldogs back in game two with a 3-0 victory in the nightcap at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn.

Freshman right fielder Matt Vogt took the reins for UMD (6-14, 2-8 NSIC) in the series opener, going 3-for-3 with five runs batted in, including a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning that stretched the lead to 8-0 for sophomore lefty Bo Hellquist (1-3). The Bulldogs' as-yet-unlucky ace finally broke through for his first win of the season, striking out six in a complete game, allowing just a pair of hits. Hellquist knocked off senior Steven Wehr of SMSU, who struck out just a pair of Bulldog in his four frames of work, allowing ten hits and eight earned runs.

The offense continued for UMD in game two as the Bulldogs combined for 10 hits, led by a 3-for-4 night by sophomore shortstop Kyle Comer, but Mustang starter Jimmy Callahan kept the door shut, tossing a nine-inning complete game with seven strikeouts.

Southwest scored single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings, each against a different Bulldog pitcher. UMD saw four pitchers take the mound in the game, combining for seven strikeouts and just eight hits allowed in nine innings. Sophomore Matt Mattiacci went 2.1 innings to start the game and fell to 1-1 on the season, allowing just a single hit but three hit-batters ended his night early.

The two teams are back at it again tomorrow night to close out the series with another doubleheader, once again scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Field in Minnetonka.
