Box Score 2 Unable to capture a win during the day one action in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, the University of Minnesota Duluth were ousted from postseason play Thursday afternoon in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Bulldogs, who wrapped up the year 25-21 overall, entered the tournament as the sixth seed in the ten-team double elimination tournament and dropped a pair of two-run decisions to No. 25 Augustana College and Upper Iowa University.
Upper Iowa struck first in the win-or-go-home matchup on a two-run double in the third. The Peacocks tallied two more runs the following inning to dig UMD in a 4-0 hole midway through. The Bulldogs finally hit pay dirt in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI hits by freshmen
Kylie Pewe and
Hailey Lundquist to slash the lead in half. UIU pitcher Brooke Redmond retained her composure getting the Bulldogs to leave the bases loaded and retired eight of the last ten batters to send UMD home with the deciding 4-2 loss.
The Bulldogs got involved in a fireworks display against the Vikings by slinging 10 home runs, which accounted for all 16 runs in the opener, combined between the two clubs. Augustana ended up hitting seven home runs to knock UMD into the elimination bracket. The Vikings had three players register a pair of long balls while the Bulldogs had round-trippers from sophomore
Sami Schnyder and two from sophomore
Dalyce Gustafson.
Falling behind 3-0 after the first frame, Schnyder lifted a 3-2 pitch over the wall for her first career grand slam and second of the season to bring UMD in front 4-3. Augustana rebounded immediately and regained a 5-4 lead. Gustafson nailed a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo rip in the sixth but it couldn't keep pace with the Vikings, who defeated the Bulldogs 9-7 in the homer fest.
The end of the season meant the end of Bulldog careers for a pair of UMD seniors,
Megan Mullen and
Brooke Neuroth. The duo compiled a 137-73 record, good for a .652 winning percentage, and won a share of the NSIC regular season title a year ago and competed in two NCAA tournaments.
