2014 NSIC Preseason Coaches' PollThe University of Minnesota Duluth faces another tough season in the ever-strengthening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and the Bulldogs were tagged with a second-place finish according to the 2014 Preseason NSIC Coaches Poll released Tuesday.
UMD finished its 2013 campaign with a 33-3 overall mark and in second place in the NSIC at 18-2 in league play before claiming the NSIC/U.S. Bank Tournament Title and the rights to host the NCAA II Central Regional Tournament. The Bulldogs were knocked off by eventual National Champion and defending NSIC Regular Season Champion Concordia University, St. Paul in the regional finals, which knotted the teams' season series at two games apiece. Concordia tops the preseason poll with 225 points including 15 first-place votes. UMD falls a close second with 206 points and the final first-place selection.
Northern State University sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Chambers earned the title of NSIC Preseason Player of the Year after earning All-NSIC First Team honors a season ago. Northern State sits fourth in the preseason poll after earning a berth in the NCAA postseason a year ago. Third-place Southwest Minnesota State University, a fellow NCAA II Central Region Tournament selection, and fifth-place Wayne State (Neb.) College round out the top five.
The Bulldogs' senior libero
Julie Rainey was selected as a player to watch in conference play this season after being named the NSIC's Libero of the Year in 2013 and an AVCA All-American Second Team selection. UMD also returns a pair of AVCA All-American Third Teamers in junior setter
Ashley Hinsch and junior middle blocker
Monica Turner.
UMD opens the 2014 NSIC season on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at St. Cloud State University. The Bulldogs will look to knock off NSIC frontrunner Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday, Oct. 11 in Duluth, and again in St. Paul on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Opening serve of the regular season and UMD's non-conference schedule will be Thursday, Sept. 4 at Northern Michigan University at 7:00 p.m. EST.
