A long-distance strike just 70 seconds into the match broke the University of Minnesota Duluth's shutout streak, and Upper Iowa University added two more late to edge UMD 3-0 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) match-up on Saturday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.
UMD (3-4-0, 3-1-0 NSIC) dropped its first match of conference-play, while Upper Iowa (2-4-0, 2-2-0 NSIC) has now outscored its past two opponents 6-0 in the NSIC.
HIGHLIGHTS• UMD freshman goalkeeper
Jordan Melby kept the Bulldogs in the match, stopping nine consecutive shots after sophomore Brianne Fenton re-directed a crossing pass right in fronf of the net to break up UMD's shutout streak in the second minute. The Bulldogs' three-straight shutouts matched the most for a UMD team since a similar streak in 2010. The program record for consecutive shutouts of nine was set in the 2000 season when the Bulldogs went 8-0-1 from Sept. 23 - Oct. 22, out-scoring opponents 19-0.
UMD worked for a few chances, finishing with 18 shots on the day, including eight on-net, but were held off the scoreboard by Peacock junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Emanuel. Senior forward
Maureen Stormont and sophomore midfielder
Marissa Ganske led the way with four shots each, but directed just three on-net. UMD's best flurry did not come until after senior forward Kalli Loscher got open at the top of the box to slip the second goal of the afternoon past Melby on Upper Iowa's 11th shot, assisted by senior Corrine Wronski.
Emanuel added an assist to her impressive performance late in the game as her throw was sent upfield by senior midfielder Aimee Wronski, allowing junior Madie Edwards to put the game on ice with the third goal of the match.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon against one of their fiercest rivals in the NSIC when they take on Winona State University. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. in Winona, Minnesota.
