For the second consecutive game, the University of Minnesota Duluth matched up against a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top-25 team as the Bulldogs traveled to no. 21 Minot State University on Saturday afternoon, falling 1-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play in Minot, North Dakota.
UMD (4-8-1, 3-6-1 NSIC) fell behind early against the Beavers, with Minot State (11-1-1, 9-0-1 NSIC) striking just past the 4:00 mark of the first half when sophomore defender Kelli Creese corraled a corner kick by freshman Ashley Franco and slipped it past Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Melby. The UMD defense held tough the rest of the way, as did Melby who collected 10 saves on the afternoon. The Bulldogs mustered seven shots, four on-net led by junior midfielder
Marissa Ganske and junior defender
Skye Finley with two each, but defense told the story of the game as both teams limited strong options. Minot State finished with 17 shots, but the Beavers' good looks were turned away by Melby and the defense outside of the early corner kick
CORNER KICKSUMD falls to 1-3-0 all-time against Minot State ... junior forward Ninfa Ramirez led all players with nine shots, including five on goal against the Bulldogs.
UP NEXTUMD continues its road trip tomorrow afternoon as the Bulldogs travel to the University of Mary on Sunday. Opening kick is set for 1:00 p.m. in Bismarck, North Dakota.
