For the second-straight match, the University of Minnesota Duluth played near-perfect defense but surrendered a late goal that cost them as Concordia University, St. Paul knocked off the Bulldogs 1-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Sunday afternoon in St. Paul.
Both teams traded strong opportunities in the erarly going with senior goalkeeper Emma Gartner making a pair of early saves to stuff UMD (4-10-2, 3-8-2 NSIC) while freshman 'keeper
Sisley Ng matched her on the other side. Concordia senior forward Alahna Anderson found a good look about ten yards in front of the net, but chipped it too high, just over the cross bar eight minutes into the match. The Golden Bears (7-8-1, 6-6-1 NSIC) controlled the time of possession through much of the first half, but the Bulldogs got a few good looks, primarily due to the speed of outside midfielders junior
Marissa Ganske and freshman
Natalie St. Martin. The shots-on-goal would lean 5-2 in the favor of the home team as the teams went to the break scoreless.
UMD would put together another flurry out of the locker room, with consecutive shots by first-year defender
Erika Hjort and sophomore midfielder
Nicole Becker stalled by Gartner. Concordia would get another open look just past the 57-minute mark, but again saw it sail wide of the goal. Through much of the second half, the game became a battle of attrition as neither team could get a solid look. Just before the 73rd minute ticked off the clock, the Golden Bears made it deep into Bulldog territory, but Ng dove out from the net and swiped the ball away from junior forward Chelsie Lindsay. Later, after UMD's first corner kick failed to produce a shot, the Buldogs would be forced to protect against one from CU. The Bears, too, would be denied a good look and sent the kick wide with just over nine minutes remaining in the regulation session.
A rush upfield finally ended in a score as Concordia broke through at the exact 86:00 mark with Anderson making good on her third shot of the afternoon, assisted by Linday and senior midfielder McKenzie Buck. For the second-straight game, a lack of offense handed Ng a tough-luck loss as she stopped 7-of-8 shots on goal. The Bulldogs would finish with six on-target shots against Gartner. Senior midfielder
Katie Peterson led the way with four of UMD's ten shots overall.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will return to Malosky Stadium for the final time on Friday evening under the lights as they play host to the University of Minnesota-Crookston. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
