With just seven players at its disposal on Saturday afternoon, the University of Minnesota Duluth could not match up with the nationally-ranked Michigan Technological University in the Bulldogs' regular season opener in Houghton, Michigan.
UMD (0-1) fell 72-43 in the opener, but head coach
Mandy Pearson got multiple scores from each of her seven available Bulldogs on the afternoon, including a near double-double from junior center
Allyson Harris, but the team was outmanned by No. 8 Michigan Tech (1-0), which had 14 players see the floor, 12 of which scored at least one basket on the night. Highlights were hard to come by for the Bulldogs, who held a lead of one just before the eight-minute mark of the first quarter, but just could not muster enough offense with a shot bench. Junior point guard
Jenna Orr netted a career-high eight points, making good on 4-of-4 trips to the free throw line. Junior forward
Kenzie Kane posted seven points and seven boards. First-year guard Samantha Koslowzki had five points and six rebounds, five on the defensive end in her debut.
Junior guard Morgan Anderson scored a game-high 17 in 30 minutes of work for Tech, while senior center Kylie Moxley collected a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies shot 45.6 percent on the night, 31-of-68, while holding the Bulldogs to just 20.0 percent, 10-of-50.
UP NEXTUMD will have a week to continue to get healthier as the Bulldogs will next be in action at the Super 8 Hotel Classic in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. UMD takes on Northern Michigan University on Saturday evening before facing the hosts from Lake Superior State University next Sunday. Opening tip of on the weekend is set for 7:30 p.m.
