NEWTON PUTS UP DOUBLE-DOUBLE AS UMD IMPRESSES IN DIVISION I EXHIBITION

The University of Minnesota Duluth led at the half of its exhibition contest with the NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, but 26 turnovers and a nearly three-minute scoring drought early in the second half cost the Bulldogs the upset bid as they fell 94-74 against the Green Bay Phoenix.

UMD (3-2) got 24 points and 11 rebounds from senior swing man Pierre Newton in 30 minutes of action, as Green Bay (1-3) picked up its first victory of the season, pulling away against the Bulldogs' bench late in the game. Senior forward Brendon Pineda fell just a point shy of a double-double, hauling in 10 boards including nine on the defensive end. Sophomore forward Jake Wilson dropped a trio of threes, adding 11 points off the bench for UMD.

Green Bay gave the Bulldogs a chance to pull away early, but UMD began the game scoreless in its first ten possessions, including four turnovers. The Bulldogs would turn over the Phoenix on its next five chances though and quickly took a five-point lead on a three by Wilson. The teams exchanged leads five times in the first half but UMD went to the locker room up despite posting Green Bay 14 points off eight Bulldog turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

That later scoreless drought, from the 4:59 mark to the 7:50 mark of the second half put UMD behind by 12. The Bulldogs would cut the lead to eight later on a three by sophomore guard Kyle Schalow but would get no closer as the Phoenix pulled away late as head coach Matt Bowen used his entire roster in the game. UMD would finish with 36 points off its bench while Green Bay's reserves scored 42. The Bulldogs had just 10 points off 10 Phoenix turnovers while Green Bay scored 29 on 26 UMD turnovers. To their credit, the Bulldogs out-rebounded UWGB 54-35 in the game.
