And the beat goes on.
Linemates
Tony Cameranesi and
Austin Farley flexed some offensive muscle -- to the tune of four points each -- in helping propel the University of Minnesota Duluth past Western Michigan University 6-2 Saturday night at AMSOIL Arena. The win completed a National Collegiate Hockey Conference series sweep for the Bulldogs, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) while moving to 7-5-3 on the year.
Freshman right winger
Adam Johnson opened the scoring and gave UMD a lead it would not relinquish 14:28 into the first when he banged in a rebound off a shot from junior left winger Alex Iaffalo. Senior right winger
Austyn Young, who registered his first collegiate shorthanded goal in Friday's 7-0 throttling of the Broncos, put UMD up 2-0 at 7:01 of the second before Oliwer Kaski cut the Western Michigan deficit in half a little more than six minutes later. That goal was the first by a Bulldog opponent since Nov. 14 -- a stretch of 263:58 (a school record). UMD then answered by scoring four straight goals, including a pair on the power play from Farley, to put the game away. Farley now has a team-leading 10 goals his season, seven of which have come with the man advantage, which tops all NCAA skaters. Cameranesi (on the power play) and rookie right winger
Parker Mackay (his second in as many nights) had the other two goals during that outburst and were among the 12 Bulldogs to pick up points on the night.
Sophomore Kaskisuo Kaskisuo, making his 27th straight start, finished with 25 saves while his Bronco counterpart, Collin Olson had 28 stops. UMD went 3-for-7 on the power play (and 7-for-12 over the weekend) and held Western Michigan scoreless in its two opportunities with the man advantage.
"It was nice to get the lead again and build off that," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "We knew that Western was going to come out and play harder tonight and they won some puck battles that they didn't win Friday. It was a harder game than the opener and I thought we responded well."
UMD will close out a four-game homestand next Friday and Saturday night by hosting the University of North Dakota. The Bulldogs hold down the No. 3 spot in the NCHC standings at 4-3-1-1 while the Fighting Hawks are first with a 7-1-0-0 mark.
Notes: Tony Cameranesi became the 55th member of UMD's career 100-point club and now has 35 goals an 66 assists during his three-plus seasons with the Bulldogs ... this weekend marked the just the second time ever UMD swept a NCHC home series. The other came on Dec. 5-6, 2014 against Colorado College .... UMD has outscored the opposition 32-4 in its seven wins this season ...
Austyn Young has scored a goal in each of the past three games. His five goals this season are one more than his entire career harvest coming into the year ... The Bulldogs are 7-1-1 when they've drawn first blood in 2015-16.
