The University of Minnesota Duluth won its second-straight game against the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division, making a weekend sweep to close out a three-game homestand at Romano Gym with a triple overtime defeat of Bemidji State University on Saturday evening in Duluth.
UMD (2-4, 2-1 NSIC) took a 48-40 lead into the fourth quarter before seeing its offense go quiet, with junior forward
Kenzie Kane laying in the Bulldogs' lone field goal of the quarter to knot the game at 53-53 and send it to overtime. Bemidji State (4-3, 0-3 NSIC) outscored the Bulldogs 13-5 in the fourth, making good on just 3-of-15 from the floor, but hit one three-pointer and scored on 8-of-10 trips to the free throw line in the final regulation stanza.
Five minutes of overtime was not enough, and neither was ten as the teams scored 10 apiece in the first overtime and seven each in the second to send it to a decisive third overtime. The two teams combined for 66 fouls on the night, with three Bulldogs fouling out and four Beavers. Luckily for UMD, one of the Bemidji players was sophomore center Sierra Senske, who scored 22 and 11 before fouling out after 33 minutes of action. Junior guard Aimee Pelzer scored 23 points for the Beavers, making good on 11-of-14 trips to the charity stripe.
UMD's best offensive performance also came from a player who would foul out before the night was done, as junior center
Allyson Harris netted 31 points to go with eight rebounds and three blocks in 32 minutes of work. In her stead, sophomore
Allison Olley also added three points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Ayo Porte fell a bucket shy of a double-double with eight points and 10 boards. After junior guard
Jenna Orr hit a three-pointer on her only three-point attempt of the night to put the Bulldogs up 75-74 in overtime, the Beavers were forced to foul. UMD made good on its free throws, with Orr and first-year point guard Samantha Kozlowksi making good on 6-of-8 from the line in the final 1:06 of the third overtime. The Bulldogs finished shooting 30-of-43 from the line, while shooting 34.8 percent (24-of-69) overall. BSU shot just 22.1 percent (19-of-86) and 36-of-45 from the free throw line.
UP NEXTUMD will have a few days to recover from the overtime thriller before beginning a three-game road trip next weekend as the team travels to Northern State University on Friday night. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m. in Aberdeen, South Dakota, preceding the men's game.
