Nick Moran's record-breaking performance in the hammer throw and two other first-place finishes, the University of Minnesota Duluth captured the team title at the Bolstorff Twlight meet Thursday night on the campus of St. Paul's Macalester College.
UMD compiled a team score of 104 points while Hamline University (93.5) and Concorida University-St. Paul (87.5) were next in the 16-school field.
Moran's winning throw of 58.27 bettered the previous Bulldog record set almost 10 years ago -- 57.35 meters by Josh Dark on April 30, 2005 at the Drake Alternative in St. Peter, Minn. Sophomore
Brian Lee took second in that same event with a toss of 50.82 meters.
"Nick has been chasing this record and was finally able to break it," said UMD head coach
Paul Nisius. "He's been the conference leader in the hammer throw throughout the outdoor season, but he really wanted this record. Now he can concentrate on his next goal and that is to qualify for the NCAA II championships.
The Bulldogs also received a first-place finish from sophomore
Jason Lilja in the long jump (6.69 meters) and their 4 x 400 relay unit of freshmen
Connor Behm,
Darrick Jackson,
Garrett Benz, and senior
Phil d'Entremont (3:22.24). Behm (49.53) and d'Entremont (49.67) also wound up 2-3 in the 400-meter dash while junior
Brendon Pineda was third in the shot put (15.84 meters). In addition, rookie
Nick Beattie took fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.31) and and fifth in the 200-meter race (22.86) and Benz (1,500-meter run; 4:11.19), sophomore
Devin Sowers (discus throw; 42.99 meters), freshman
Cody Sedbrook (3,000-meter steeplechase; 9:56.06) and sophomore
Nick Krouse (triple jump; 12.51 meters) also finished fifth in their respective events.
"We had a very good meet," said Nisius. "The weather hadn't been the best for practices over the past week, but thankfully it was okay tonight in St. Paul."
