Junior first baseman
Jordan Rice delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift the University of Minnesota Duluth to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Bemidji State University and gain a split in its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with the host Beavers Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs, who had originally been scheduled to host the twinbill yesterday (and then today) before it was moved to Bemidji, Minn., due to cold conditions in the Twin Ports, were no-hit by Bemidji State in the opener -- falling 8-0 in five innings.
UMD
Cayli Sadler (11-9) rolled up a career-high 13 strikeouts while walking none and allowed just four hits (including a solo home run in the top of second) in the game two victory. She locked up in a pitcher's duel with Jessica Yost, who gave up only five hits after tossing the no-no earlier in the day. Rice collected two of UMD's hits, while junior third baseman
Sami Schnyder (a double), batting out of the leadoff position, rookies Alexia Klass and
Natalie Wright had the others. Yost and Bulldog sophomore
Sam Hartmann (11-6) both struck out seven in the opener, but Hartmann was touched up for three home runs and seven hits in her five innings of mound duty.
The Bulldogs (22-15 overall; 6-8 NSIC) will return to James S. Malosky Stadium four league twin bills against Southwest Minnesota State University on Saturday and the University of Sioux Falls the following afternoon as part of the second annual 1FOUR Mandy Matula weekend.
