The University of Minnesota Duluth gave away just three good looks to Northern State University on Sunday afternoon, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs, NSU junior forward Anna Bondy connected on all three as the Wolves knocked off UMD 3-1 in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match at Malosky Stadium in Duluth.
The Bulldogs (2-3-1, 1-1-1 NSIC) played relatively even through the opening 45 minutes with Northern State (3-2-1, 1-1-1 NSIC) as each team collected seven shots through the first half, but Bondy netted two of her three scores in the opening frame. The first came on an assist from sophomore midfielder Allison Byrd just before the seven-minute mark of the match, and the second with 31:15 off the clock with an assist from junior midfielder Kay Hernandez. The Bulldog defense was strong otherwise in front of first-year goalkeeper
Carlye Wright, who stopped four balls in the first half before giving way to freshman
Sisley Ng in the second.
UMD allowed just one shot by the Wolves in the second half, putting near-constant pressure on Northern State's defense with 12 shots, including seven on net, in the period. Unfortunately, the shot was the hat trick-sealing score for Bondy with 14:30 remaining in the match. The Bulldogs would get on the board in the 90th minute when first-year forward
Logan Nash deflected in a
Marissa Ganske corner kick to break up the shutout. Unfortunately, it was too late for UMD as the Wolves held them without another look as the final seconds ticked away. Senior goalkeeper Brittany Tietz made 11 saves against UMD on the afternoon.
CORNER KICKSUMD now holds a 13-2-1 record all-time against Northern State ... junior forward
Katie Peterson led the way with five shots for UMD including a pair on goal ... junior
Kailey Beatt added four shots, three on goal, including a near game-tying header that was hauled in by Tietz early in the first half ... Nash collected the first goal of her Bulldog career, the fourth player to earn that feat for UMD this season.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs' four-match homestand continues next week as the team plays host to Upper Iowa University on Saturday before the team's top rival, No. 18 Winona State University, travels to Duluth next Sunday. Opening kick between UMD and UIU is set for 12:00 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
