The fog cleared over Malosky Stadium after the half, but the University of Minnesota Duluth could not clear the goal line against Upper Iowa University as the Peacocks earned a 1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiare Conference victory over the Bulldogs in Duluth on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (2-4-1, 1-2-1 NSIC) had 12 total shots in the match, compared to just three for Upper Iowa (3-2-2, 2-1-1 NSIC) but couldn't get the score it needed to break a scoreless tie that lasted until the 78th minute. That was when senior midfielder Madie Edwards drove a ball through the Bulldog defense and netted the lone score of the match with just 11:48 remaining, her fifth of the Peacocks' nine goals this season, earning an assist from first-year defender Erin Svennson. UMD had its best chance of the afternoon moments later as junior midfielder
Marissa Ganske sped past the Upper Iowa defense down the sideline and rocketed a shot that nailed the cross bar, and was quickly cleared out by the Peacocks before a trailing runner could react to the rebound. That score held up, with the Bulldogs holding the ball in Upper Iowa's end through much of the final minutes including a late attempt by first-year forward
Madison Carey that trickled just wide.
UMD sophomore goalkeeper
Jordan Melby stopped a pair of balls in taking the tough loss while Upper Iowa senior Kaitlyn Emanuel made four saves in the match against the Bulldogs. Ganske had a game-high five shots for UMD, seconded by first-year defender
Erika Hjort, who added three on the day. Edwards and two others each tied with one shot for Upper Iowa.
UP NEXTThe Bulldogs will have to rebound quickly as NSIC rival No. 25 Winona State University comes to Duluth on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Malosky Stadium.
