UMD SETTLES FOR WEEKEND SPLIT AS CROOKSTON USES THREE-BALL TO PULL AWAY

The University of Minnesota Duluth fell victim to a pair of hot-shooting seniors for the University of Minnesota Crookston, and the Bulldogs will have to settle for a season split against its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference North Division rival, falling 74-60 on Sunday afternoon in Crookston.

The Bulldogs (4-9, 4-6 NSIC) opened the first half on a 7-0 run punctuated by three-pointer by first-year guard Sammy Kozlowski. Minnesota Crookston (11-3, 8-2 NSIC) used the three-point shot to its advantage by hitting three in under 90 seconds and five in the fir quarter to gain a 18-15 edge after the first quarter. UMD went shot-for-shot with UMC from beyond the arc, hitting three in the second quarter as each went to the locker room with six splashdowns. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs had a +10 advantage in rebounds, grabbing 22 in the first half compared to just 12 for the Golden Eagles. The Bulldogs also gave themselves second chances with eight offensive boards as they went to the locker room with a 33-31 advantage.

Just as UMD opened the game on a run, the Golden Eagles turned the score in their favor with an 8-0 run answering a lay-up by junior center Allyson Harris to open the scoring. Harris produced five straight points for the Bulldogs, but another run by UMC, this time nine points, put the Eagles up 48-40 with 2:05 remaining in the period. Crookston continued to use the three-point shot to its advantage in the second half, hitting a pair to start the fourth quarter and extend its lead to 13 at 56-43. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were still stuck at six total after three quarters gone.

UMD finally broke that streak, once again turning to Kozlowski from beyond the arc has she hit a pair in a 24-second span, pulling the Bulldogs within 11 with 5:06 remaining. UMD would cut the lead down to seven at 67-60, but the team went scoreless in the final 1:57 and have to settle for a season split with the Golden Eagles, having defated Minnesota Crookston in Duluth earlier this season.

Harris and Kozlowski would lead the way for UMD offensively with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Kozlowski added a team-high eight rebounds. After hitting six threes in the first half, UMD would hit just three after the break while Crookston had 12 on the game. Seniors Alexa Thielman and Katrina Nordick had 21 and 19 points, respectively, for the Golden Eagles. Thielman scored each of her points on her seven three-pointers.

The Bulldogs will continue on the road next weekend takes its longest trip of the season next time out at Wayne State College. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday night in Wayne, Nebraska.
