The University of Minnesota Duluth sought playoff revenge against Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference South Division rival Augustana (S.D.) University, but the Bulldogs could not earn that payback victory from last season's NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, falling 79-60 to the Vikings in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday afternoon.
UMD (4-11, 4-8 NSIC) fell victim to hot shooting in the first half, as Augustana (14-4, 8-4 NSIC) hit 17-of-36 attempts including 10-of-21 from three-point range to double up the Bulldogs, 52-22 headed to the locker room. UMD shot just 28.1 percent in the opening 20 minutes, 9-of-32, hitting just one three-pointer in the opening frames. While the Vikings' outlandish shooting did much of the damage, the Bulldogs did themselves little favor with 11 turnovers in the first half. The road team made good on just 3-of-8 free throws while Augie scored on 8-of-8 in the first half.
Augustana could not keep up its torrid pace in the second half while UMD put together a comeback effort. Unfortunately, it was not enough to overcome the halftime deficit. The Bulldogs outscored the Vikings 38-27 in the final two periods. Five different players would score at least eight points for UMD, led by junior center
Allyson Harris with 12 and senior guard
Taylor Dillinger with 10. Sophomore forward
Allison Olley grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds. Three different Vikings had at least 12 points on the night, led by forward Logan O'Farrell's 18. Nicole Kerkhoff had 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
UMD will have a chance to regain its footing in the NSIC next weekend as the Bulldogs begin a four-game homestand at Romano Gym Friday night against Minot State University. Opening tip is set for 6:00 p.m. in Duluth.
