The University of Minnesota Duluth struck twice in the opening four minutes of play and that was all the scoring it would wind up needing in a 3-1 non-conference victory over Northern Michigan University Saturday night in Marquette, Mich.
UMD, which put the clamps on a five-game winless skid (0-4-1) and salvaged a split in the two-game series, got goals from senior
Tony Cameranesi (his ninth of the year just 69 seconds in) and freshman left winger
Parker Mackay (at 3:56) on its first three shots. The Mackay score ended the night for Northern Michigan goaltender Mathias Israelsson and his replacement -- fellow Swedish native Mathias Dahlstrom -- didn't fare much better that period, stopping one of the two shots UMD sent his way while surrendering a goal to junior center
Dominic Toninato (his second of the weekend and 10th of 2015-16) with 1:57 to play.
That 3-0 lead held up until the 16:31 mark of the second period when Northern Michigan's Darren Nowick rifled in a shot from between the circles that beat sophomore goaltender
Kasimir Kaskisuo, who finished with 19 saves while making his 36th start in the past 37 games. UMD went 0-for-7 on the power play, but blanked the Wildcats (10-10-6 overall) on all six of its manpower advantage chances, including one that encompassed the final 23 seconds of regulation.
"We came out and jumped on their freshmen goalie with those two quick goals and that was the difference," said head coach
Scott Sandelin, whose club matched a season-low with its 22 shots on goal. "After that, it was a much tighter game and we expected that."
The Bulldogs (9-11-5 overall) will return to AMSOIL Arena this Friday night to take on Colorado College in the front end of a two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series.
