SOUTHWEST STRIKES LAST IN STREAKY GAME TO KNOCK OFF UMD SATURDAY

Trailing 63-55 into the fourth-quarter, the University of Minnesota Duluth took a lead five-point lead with a 16-3 run but went quiet in the final 3:44 against Southwest Minnesota State University, falling 87-75 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Romano Gym.

UMD (5-14, 5-11 NSIC) trailed after the first, took a lead to the locker room at halftime and led again late but couldn't get the basket that broke up a 17-0 run down the stretch by Southwest Minnesota State (4-18, 2-14 NSIC). Junior center Allyson Harris netted 22 points for the Bulldogs but fouled out after 23 minutes. Sophomore forward Allison Olley netted 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench, while first-year guard Sammy Kozlowski had 10 points and seven boards in a start.

The lead changed 15 times, and the two teams combined for 10 tie scores in the game. The five-point for UMD at 75-70 was the largest of the game for the Bulldogs while SMSU led by six a few times in the game but couldn't sink the basket to pull away until late. The Mustangs excelled on the evening at drawing fouls against UMD while being disciplined on their own defensive end. The Bulldogs finished with a foul disparity of 28 to Southwest's 13. SMSU made good on those opportunities, finishing 34-of-40 from the line. UMD shot 45.3 percent on the night, hitting 29 shots on 64 attempts while Southwest finished 24-of-63 from the floor. The Bulldogs took just 18 trips to the free throw line and five in the second half.

The Mustangs had four players reach double figures led by senior forward Hope Bonlander's 25. Sophomore forward Lauren Hedlund notched a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds on the afternoon. The Mustangs out-rebounded the Bulldogs 49 to 31 on the night.

UMD will be on the road for four of its final six in the NSIC regular season. As the team turns the calendar to February, they will travel to Upper Iowa University and no. 10 Winona State University next weekend. The Bulldogs and Peacocks will tip off the weekend Friday night in Fayette, Iowa at 6:00 p.m.
