The University of Minnesota Duluth set a number of offensively superlative including its most points of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season as the Bulldogs bounced Upper Iowa University 84-60 on the road Friday night in Fayette, Iowa. UMD (6-14, 6-11 NSIC)'s 84 points marked the second time the team went over 80 this season, as the Bulldogs also scored their most field goals made (29), highest field goal percentage (55.8), three-pointers (12), three-point field goal percentage (63.2) and assists 18 in the team's second road victory of the conference campaign. Kenzie Kane scored 17, hitting five three-pointers, while freshman forward
Emma Boehm made her return to the line-up, hitting 4-of-4 three-pointers to add 14 points in her only shot attempts of the game.
UMD doubled up Upper Iowa (5-18, 4-13 NSIC) in the first quarter, 24-12, with Kane and Boehm each hitting a pair of three-pointers to lead the way. The Peacocks were just 3-of-12 in the period but hit 6-of-7 free throws to keep within striking distance after 10 minutes. The foul shots went the way of the home team in the second quarter, and UMD made good on 7-of-7, extending its lead with a 17-4 frame as Upper Iowa went 0-of-13 from the floor scoring its points on free throw attempts. After going to the locker room leading by 25 at 41-16, the Bulldogs needed to just hold off Upper Iowa in the second half.
Upper Iowa's offense came alive in the second half, hitting 14-of-30 (46.7 percent) after the break including 23 points in the third quarter, but UMD matched its scoring stroke adding 43 in the second half. The Bulldogs' 12 three-pointers were one shy of matching the program record, set on four occasions. Boehm's four field goals on four attempts also fell one shy of the UMD single game high (5-for-5, set on two occasions). Ayo Porte had a team-high six rebounds. Upper Iowa got 20 points from Aleesha Cleaver and eight rebounds from Carly Pagel in defeat.
The Bulldogs will continue tomorrow afternoon on the road with its toughest test yet of the NSIC season against No. 10 Winona State University. Opening tip is set for 4:00 p.m. in Winona, Minnesota.
