The University of Minnesota Duluth got goals from six different players and a debut shutout performance from rookie
Hunter Miska and cruised to a 6-0 victory over Michigan Tech University Friday night at AMSOIL Arena.
Miska, the reigning USA Hockey Goalie of the Year, stopped all 21 shots the No. 17 Huskies sent his way en route to becoming just the second Bulldog to ever post a shut out in his collegiate debut. UMD's volunteer goalie coach,
Brant Nicklin, was the other, doing so in a 3-0 takedown of visiting Army on Oct. 12, 1996.
"The guys played really well in front of me and allowed me to see the puck," said Miska, who also picked up an assist in the victory. "This was an awesome experience for my first college game."
With Michigan Tech's Alex Gillies serving a five-minute major for contact to the head, sophomore right winger
Parker Mackay broke the ice with UMD's first goal of the season off a tip from sophomore defenseman
Neal Pionk's blast near the left point 5:46 into the first period. Junior left winger
Blake Young followed that up with his first collegiate score (in his 32nd lifetime game) at 15:09 of the first period before senior defenseman
Willie Raskob struck on the power play at 2:06 of the second period to make it 3-0. Senior
Kyle Osterberg and sophomore center
Adam Johnson (power play) added goals later that period and freshman left winger
Jade Miller punched one in early in the third to round out the scoring. MacKay and Raskob, who both helped set up Johnson's goal, and
Karson Kuhlman (two assists) were the the lone Bulldogs with two-point nights. In all, 15 of the 19 UMD players who saw ice time marked in the points column.
"This was a good win for us," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "It's early in the year, so the execution by both teams wasn't great, but our power play got off to a good start (3-for-6)and our goaltender played well."
No. 6 UMD will look to complete its first season-opening series in 20 years Sunday afternoon when it faces Michigan Tech again at AMSOIL Arena.
Notes: The last team to fall to the Bulldogs twice on the first weekend of the year was Ferris State University on Oct. 13-14, 1995 in Duluth. The first triumph over Ferris State (3-0) that series also marked the last time -- prior to tonight -- a UMD club had launched a new season with a shutout ... Senior center and team captain
Dominic Toninato was awarded a penalty shot -- the first by a Bulldog since March 9, 2012 -- in the third period and was stopped by Michigan Tech's Devin Kero ... Going back to last year, UMD has won five straight games at home ... The Bulldogs are unbeaten in eight of their last nine meetings with Michigan Tech (6-1-2).
