BULLDOGS IMPROVE TO 15-0 BY TAKING DOWN MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO IN FIVE SETS

Fifteen games in the book, fifteen victories for the University of Minnesota Duluth. For the second straight night, No. 2 UMD prevailed in a decisive fifth set against tough NSIC competition.

UMD (15-0, 7-0 NSIC) played from behind for much of the evening, but was able to win the final two sets to overcome Minnesota State University's (9-6, 3-4 NSIC) upset bid. After being held to a season low hitting percentage last night, the Bulldogs got back to their efficiency on offense by hitting .291 on the match. UMD defended the net extremely well - setting a season high in blocks with 12. Senior outside hitter Taylor Wissbroecker led the way for the Bulldog attack, tying her career best with 20 kills in addition to tallying eight digs. Sophomores Makenzie Morgen and Sarah Kelly recorded 16 kills a piece, while Morgen grabbed her fourth double-double of the season by adding 14 digs. Freshman setter Emily Torve also surpassed her career high by assisting 58 times over five sets. Minnesota State was led offensively by senior middle blocker Krista Hassing, who hit .353, thanks to her 19 kills.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the opening set, but Minnesota State would turn things around quickly by running off five straight points, forcing UMD head-man Jim Boos to take a timeout. The Mavericks would continue to excel offensively however, as they came out on top by a score of 25-18 while hitting a match high .423 in the first set.

UMD responded to the early deficit by stepping up its defense in the second set - holding the Mavericks to just .152 offensively. Wissbroecker downed four five kills on 10 attacks to aid the Bulldogs. Junior defensive specialist Kelly Madison provide a spark off the bench by digging out four balls to lead UMD defensively in the second set. The Bulldogs led for much of the set, eventually bringing the match to a 1-1 tie with a 25-20 set victory.

Facing a 2-1 deficit following a third set win for Minnesota State, UMD bounced back yet again by bring the match to a 2-2 tie with a 25-21 fourth set victory behind six kills from Kelly. The Mavericks did not do themselves any favors by committing nine errors over the fourth set. The Bulldogs held the lead for the majority of the set - only trailing by one point on two occasions.

After prevailing over top-ranked Concordia University, St. Paul in the decisive fifth set last night, UMD was able to repeat the feat tonight by downing Minnesota State by a score of 15-11. The Bulldogs saved their best offensive performance for last by hitting .429 and committing just two errors. Sophomore libero Erin Schindler did her part defensively, tallying five of UMD's nine digs to end the match.

Five undefeated teams entered the weekend, but only two escaped without a loss as the University of Minnesota Duluth and the University of Nebraska, Kearney are the only remaining teams without a defeat in all of Division II. UMD will look to take the No. 1 ranking before they battle the University of Mary and Minot State University next weekend.
