The University of Minnesota Duluth couldn't find a way to stop Southwest Minnesota State University Sunday afternoon as it fell 4-1 on the road in Marshall, Minn. UMD has now lost four out of its last five games against SMSU after previously winning the first 21 meetings (22-4).
A pair of goals from junior midfielder Emily Huddleston in the first 20 minutes put the Mustangs (5-8-1; 4-6-1 NSIC) up early, as the Bulldogs (6-5-3; 4-4-3 NSIC) were unable to come back from the deficit.
Junior midfielder
Hailey Hoff captured her first career goal for UMD. Hoff's goal came at 47:37 off a corner kick from junior defender
Anna Morrison to pull the Bulldogs within one. Junior forward Amanda Hartmann knocked in her fifth goal of the season at 66:40 to put SMSU up 3-1. Senior midfielder Morgan Weyer-Coates put the game out of reach for UMD as she added an insurance goal in the final minutes of the game.
The Bulldogs got 20 or more shots for the second time this season, their last coming on Sept. 23, 2016 against MSU Moorhead, where they shot the ball 22 times. Sophomore midfielder
Natalie St. Martin led all players with five shots, three of which went on net. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sisley Ng tied a career high with 10 saves. Ng has now gone back-to-back games with making 10 saves for the first time in her career.Â
UMD will head home to Malosky Stadium to face Wayne State University (7-4-3; 4-4-3) on Friday (Oct. 21) at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs have yet to drop a match to the Wildcats in program history (13-0-2).
