BAUER, BULLDOGS ROLL TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN BY TOPPLING MINOT STATE

Drew Bauer figured in on four of the University of Minnesota Duluth's five touchdowns in its 38-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference road triumph over Minot State University Saturday afternoon, but that wasn't the senior team captain's only noteworthy accomplishment.

Besides throwing for three scores and running for another, Bauer became the Bulldogs' top rushing quarterback of all time. Bauer wound up with just 13 ground yards on the day, but that gave him 2,905 yards for his career, which is two more than the previous career leader, his predecessor Chase Vogler, accumulated from 2009-12.

Bauer's one-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the first quarter put UMD up 10-0, but Minot State answered with a score of their own on its next possession to cut the UMD lead to 10-7. After that, Bauer hooked up with senior wide out Beau Bofferding on a pair of lengthy second-quarter scoring passes (31 and 32 yards) and then hit junior wide out Nate Ricci with a 56-yard touchdown toss midway through the third quarter. Bauer then called it a day and his backup, Mike Rybarczyk, tacked on another touchdown -- his first as a collegian  -- by running in from 15 yards out two minutes into the final quarter to complete UMD's run of 28 unanswered points.

Bauer completed 13 of 25 passes for 243 yards while helping propel the Bulldogs (5-1 overall) to their fifth straight win. Rybarczyk threw for 56 yard while going 4-for-5 before giving way to another red shirt freshman quarterback, Ben Everhardt, with just over nine minutes to go in the second half. Everhardt, in his UMD debut made good on two of five passes for 23 yards.

UMD dominated Minot State (1-5 overall) in virtually every statistical category including total yards (516/181), first downs (27/9), rushing yards (194/51) and passing yards (322/130). The Beavers, who are now 0-5 lifetime against the Bulldogs and have been outscored 226-23 in the process. Minot State mustered just 53 overall yards (a mere three yards via the rush) the entire first half and turned the ball over three times -- all fumbles -- on the afternoon.

Bulldog senior running back Darren Walker led all rushers with 84 yards on 15 carries while Ricci and junior wide out James Conner both had a game-high four receptions.

UMD collectively sacked Minot State quarterback Isaiah Weed eight times -- two sacks shy of the program single-game record -- with eight different Bulldogs getting into the act. Senior inside linebacker Beau Bates, who was one of 24 Bulldogs to register a tackle, paced UMD in that department with seven stops.

The Bulldogs will return to James S. Malosky Stadium next Saturday (Oct. 15) for Homecoming and a NSIC North Division matchup with Northern State University (3-3 overall).
