Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

NO. 6 BULLDOGS RALLY FOR SECOND STRAIGHT NIGHT TO SALVAGE TIE WITH UMASS LOWELL

Another night. Another rally. Another tie.

For the second straight game, the University of Minnesota Duluth had to overcome a third-period deficit to salvage a draw with the University of Massachusetts Lowell. On Saturday after his team had trailed 1-0 for pretty much the entire evening, sophomore defenseman Neal Pionk banged in a rebound with 3:54 to go in regulation and both teams then held on for a 1-1 tie at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass.

With the goal, his team-leading third of the season (which is just once less than he generated his entire rookie year), Pionk helped keep the No. 6 Bulldogs unbeaten through four games (2-0-2) for the first time since the 2004-05 season. No. 8 UMass Lowell, which cashed in on its first power play opportunity three minutes into the game for its only score, is 0-0-2.

The non-conference clash featured a pair of rookie goalies who made their collegiate starting debuts. Redshirt freshman Nick Deery, who came on in relief of starting netminder Hunter Miska in the second period (and UMD down 4-1) of Friday's 4-4 draw, finished with 25 saves while his counterpart, freshman Tyler Wall certainly lived up to his surname by stopping 40 of the 41 shots the Bulldogs sent his way. He also played a key part in keeping the Bulldogs off the board on all six of their power play chances. Sophomore right winger Karson Kuhlman and senior defenseman Willie Raskob paced the Bulldogs with seven and six shots, respectively.

"I thought we were very fortunate to just be down by just one after the first period -- we were sleepwalking, " said UMD head coach Scott Sandelin. "Our goaltender gave us a chance by keeping things close and then I liked the way we played the final 40 minutes of regulation."

The Bulldogs will return to AMSOIL Arena to host the University of Notre Dame next Friday and Saturday night. The Irish are off to a 2-0-0 start this season after sweeping visiting Arizona State University over the weekend and were ranked ninth in the latest USCHO.com Poll.

Notes: UMD has outscored the opposition 6-0 in the third period this season ... Neal Pionk and Adam Johnson are the lone to Bulldogs to pick up at least one point in all four games to date  ... Sammy Spurrell and Adam Johnson were credited with the two assists on Pionk's game-tying goal. For Spurrell, it was his first point since collecting an assist on Feb. 6, 2016 against Colorado College ... Over the weekend, Nick Deery, posted a .974 saves percentage (38 stops on 39 shots) and allowed just the one power play goal ... UMD is unbeaten in six of its seven lifetime visits to Lowell (4-1-2) ... UMD outshot UMass Lowell 41-14 during the third period over the two-game series. That included a 20-4 advantage Saturday evening.
