Using the same script from the previous night, the University of Minnesota Duluth rallied for a second consecutive 5-3 National Collegiate Hockey Conference victory over St. Cloud State University Saturday.
Just like it had done in the series opener some 24 hours earlier, the Bulldogs spotted the host Huskies a 3-1 second-period lead, only to surge back with four unanswered goals -- including three in the final 12 minutes of regulation. That completed the Bulldogs' third straight sweep at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (they are perfect 6-0-0 in their last six visits there) and pushed their NCHC winning streak to a school-record eight games dating back to last February.
St. Cloud State's Robby Jackson, who struck in the opening 34 seconds of play Friday, scored 53 seconds into the rematch to give the No. 8 Huskies a quick 1-0 lead again. Just over three minutes later, top-ranked UMD answered when rookie right winger
Joey Anderson went top shelf with a shot for his third goal of the season -- and third in as many nights. St. Cloud State went back on top with 18:41 to go in the first period, then added a power play goal (its first of the weekend in eight man advantage opportunities) at the 15:43 mark of the second period. Senior center
Dominic Toninato cut the UMD deficit in half with 1:37 before the second intermission by wacking in his own rebound out of midair and senior defenseman
Carson Soucy then got the equalizer -- a snipe from the left face off circle at 7:33 of the third. UMD took its first lead of the game with 5:18 off an end-to-end rush from
Neal Pionk. The sophomore defenseman's close in shot was stopped by the legpad of St. Cloud State goaltender, but sophomore right winger
Parker Mackay was right on the doorstep to tap in the loose puck. Soucy, just as Anderson had done one Friday, iced the victory with a late empty net tally.
The Bulldogs (7-1-2 overall, 4-0-0-0 NCHC) have outscored the opposition 14-2 in the final period of play so far in 2016-17, including 6-0 this weekend. Rookie
Hunter Miska, making his fourth start in a row, improved to 6-0-0 with a 31-save performance.
"It was kind of a mirror image of last night's game," said UMD head coach
Scott Sandelin. "I thought we got better as the game went on and had another strong third period."
The Bulldogs will return to AMSOIL Arena (where they have won nine of the last 10 games) this weekend (Nov. 11-12) for a pair of NCHC clashes with Western Michigan University.
