The University of Minnesota Duluth, still looking for an elusive road win in its 2016 campaign, fell to the University of Sioux Falls by a score of 83-70 on Saturday night.
Freshman forward
Luke Harris continued to show promise as a reliable scorer for the Bulldogs (1-7; 1-3 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference), netting 15 points on an efficient 7-11 from the field. Junior guard
Kyle Schalow added 13 points of his own while converting on six of seven from the free throw line.
UMD shot consistent with its season field goal percentage, making 26 of 62 (41.9 percent) shots on the night. The Bulldogs struggled from three-point range, knocking down just six of 20 for a 30.0 percentage. Despite sporting a young lineup of nearly all freshmen and sophomores, UMD continued to do a relatively good job taking care of the ball, turning it over only 13 times.
Sioux Falls (5-7; 2-3 NSIC) held the lead from start to finish, led by a career-high in points from senior forward Daniel Hurtt (33). The Cougars shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 47.6 percent from the three-point line in the victory.
With USF holding a 21-17 lead just past the halfway mark in the first half, the Cougars ran off a 10-2 run to grab a double-digit lead. An and-one from sophomore forward
Ryan Kaczynski cut the deficit to 33-29 with 4:36 remaining, but Sioux Falls would not let the Bulldogs get closer, taking a 45-38 lead into the locker room.
UMD would hang within 10 points of the Cougars for the opening 10 minutes of the second half until USF rattled off 10 straight points to grab a 70-56 advantage. Sioux Falls held off any Bulldog push, remaining ahead by at least 12 points the remainder of the way. Freshman guard
Logan Rohrscheib knocked down a three with 11 seconds remaining, bringing the final score to 83-70 in favor of the Cougars.
UMD will return to Romano Gymnasium next weekend as it plays host to St. Cloud State University on Dec. 17 before facing a non-conference battle with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Dec. 19.
