Sophomore center fielder
Hannah Schmoll became the University of Minnesota Duluth's single-season base stealling leader Wednesday afternoon and she and her Bulldog teammates rolled past the University of Minnesota Crookston twice to the tune of 8-0 and 10-0 (in six and five innings, respectively) at James S. Malosky Stadium.
With the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference home doubleheader sweep and their first back-to-back shutout wins since March 11, 2014, the Bulldogs improved to 24-11 overall and 13-5 in league play. Minnesota Crookston, which managed just eight hits in the twin losses, remained in last place in the NSIC standings at 1-17 to go with a 7-31 mark in all games.
Schmoll, a 2015 All-NSIC (first team) and Daktronics All-Region (second team) honoree, swiped four bases on the afternoon, giving her 30 for the season. That's one more than the previous Bulldog record holder, Micheala Goris, amassed three years ago.
In the opener, UMD clung to a 1-0 lead through four innings before scoring twice in the fifth and five times in the sixth. Sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wright, who has now hit safely in 23 of the past 24 games, went 2-for-4 with one double and drove in four runs while senior third baseman
Sami Schnyder also had two hits. Senior pitcher
Cayli Sadler (11-5) gave up six hits over six innings en route to posting her second shutout of the season and ninth of her career.
The Bulldogs followed that up by collecting 12 hits -- the last of which was a three-run walk-off home run to left field by senior first baseman
Abbey Nelson -- that capped off the 10-0 triumph. Sophomore shortstop
Becky Smith went 3-for-3 and Schnyder chipped in again with two hits and four RBI. The two runs UMD generated in their first at-bats was all junior pitcher
Sam Hartmann (11-6) would need as she tossed a two-hitter while facing just one batter more than the minimum. Hartmann has now rolled off five straight victories and during that 34 2/3-innings stretch she has given up only six earned runs UMD did not commit and error in either of the tow games.
The Bulldogs, who checked in at No. 10 in first NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings of 2016, will return to their other on-campus home, Junction Avenue Field, for the first time since April 29, 2011 this Saturday (April 16), when they host Wayne State College on Domestic Abuse Awareness Day. The first pitch for that NSIC twinbill is set for 1:00p.m.
