Cold and wintry weather in Duluth may have forced the University of Minnesota Duluth to take its show on the road, but a change in venues had little affect on the Bulldogs.
UMD's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's doubleheader with Winona State University Sunday was shifted Winona where the "host" Bulldogs came away with a two-game sweep, winning 3-2 and 10-2 over the Warriors, who were ranked 17th in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association DivisIon II Poll. UMD, which has now won 14 of its last 17 games, is 18-9 overall and 7-3 in the NSIC.
In the opener, senior right fielder
Ashley Schilling delivered a walk-off single (her third hit of the game) that brought home junior left fielder Haily Lundquist in the bottom of the seventh inning to make a winner out of senior pitcher
Cayli Sadler (10-4), who allowed seven hits -- two of which were solo home runs -- and struck out three while posting her eighth consecutive victory. Senior left fielder
Ashley Lewis went 2-for-3 and drove in one run while sophomore second baseman
Natalie Wright had UMD's other RBI, a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth inning that knotted the score at 2-2.
The Bulldogs then used an eight-run fifth inning to erase a 2-0 Winona State lead and prevail in the rematch. Schilling accounted for half of those eight runs by blasting a grand slam and wound up going 3-for-5. Wright also picked up three hits, including her eighth double of the year, to extend her hitting streak to 16 games while sophomore center fielder and lead off hitter Hannah Schmool drove in two runs and was 2-for-3 Junior left hander Sam Hartman (7-5) gave up just five hits rolled up six strikeouts in the six-inning triumph.
UMD will pay a visit to Fayette, Iowa, on Monday to take on Upper Iowa University in a pair of NSIC engagements.
