PAIR OF WISCONSIN STATE HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS TO JOIN UMD TRACK TEAM IN 2016-17

Elizabeth Kyes and Alyssa Kavajecz, who each captured individual titles at the Wisconsin State High School Track and Field Championships earlier this month, have signed a letter of intent or letter of admission to attend and run for the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2016-17.

"Elizabeth's and Alyssa's commitment to excellence, their desire to win, and their dedication and hard work to excel in their events was rewarded at the state meet with championship medals," said UMD head coach Joanna Warmington. "I look forward to coaching these women the next four years and cultivate that success from high school to the college level. I'm very proud to call Elizabeth and Alyssa UMD Bulldogs."

Kyes, of Cadott High School, took top Division 3 honors in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.76.  She also sprinted to a second-place finish in the 400-meter finals, posting an impressive time of 57.43.  Kyes also took part in two other events during the three-day event in La Crosse, Wis. -- the 4 x 400 relay, and the triple jump.

Kavajecz, of South Shore High School, placed first among 16 competitors in the Division 3 high jump, doing so with an impressive personal-effort of 5'-8".  That jump was just one inch off the all-time Division 3 Wisconsin state record.
