The University of Minnesota Duluth opened up its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season with a 0-0 draw in double overtime against St. Cloud State University.
Neither the Bulldogs (2-1-1; 0-0-1 NSIC) nor the Huskies (1-2-1; 0-0-1 NSIC) could nab a goal in the double overtime match. These teams have now gone into 2OT and tied in back-to-back meetings. UMD last won an OT/2OT game Oct. 18, 2013, against Concordia-St. Paul.
UMD outshot St. Cloud State 14-7 in the game, with six different Bulldogs getting a shot off. Junior defender Skye Finley and sophomore defender Lizzy Fontes each tallied four shots of their own. Sophomore goalkeeper Sisley Ng collected four saves as well as her second career shutout for UMD.
The Bulldogs defense allowed just one shot on goal in the first half. The tables turned in the second half when the Huskies defense also allowed just a single shot on goal. Fontes would be the only player from either side to get a shot on net in OT.
UMD will face Concordia University-St. Paul (0-3) next on Friday (Sept. 16). The Bulldogs will finish up their road trip against Minnesota State University-Mankato (1-1-1) on Sunday (Sept. 18).
