On their 30th anniversary, the 1986 University of Minnesota Duluth football team will be the Bulldogs' honored guests this Saturday night at James S. Malosky Stadium when UMD takes on Augustana University.
That club, which was coached by the legendary Jim Malosky, closed out the year with an 8-1-2 overall record and went unbeaten (4-0-2) in NSIC play. Along the way, the Bulldogs broke neary two dozen program records, including points (361) and total first downs (100). The late Corey Veech, who was then a senior running back and captain, set a team mark for rushing attempts in both a season (269) and in a career (606) while senior linebacker Wayde Preston rolled up more interception return yards (171) than any other Bulldog had ever done to that point.
Three members of the 1986 Bulldogs -- Veech (2009), wide receiver/defensive back Mike Petrich (2004) and defensive tackle Dave Viaene (2010) are all UMD Athletic Hall of Fame inductees.
