The University of Minnesota Duluth didn't get the result they had hoped for in its home opener against Michigan Tech University. The Huskies went on to shutout the Bulldogs 1-0.
In the first half, both UMD (1-1-0) and Michigan Tech (2-1-0) had their fair share of scoring chances, each having seven shots. Five different Bulldogs got a shot off in the first half, including sophomore midfielder
Natalie St. Martin who would account for three of them. Sophomore goalkeeper
Sisley Ng tallied up seven saves in the loss. Huskies junior goalkeeper Kirsen Hudak finished with six saves of her own including an acrobatic diving save off an upper right corner shot from St. Martin in the 35th minute to keep the score 0-0. Michigan Tech would go on to outshoot UMD 8-4 in the second half, whern senior forward Jacqueline Mielke would score the only goal of the game at 74:21; her first of the season.
"It was a lot of work," said Ng. "But the team did their best and we worked our hardest. We should be really proud."
"It was a miscommunication on the part of the goalkeeper and the player on the ball," said head coach
Greg Cane. "It happens, it just happened at the wrong time."
Freshman defender
Claire Pueschner made her Bulldog debut, coming on to the pitch with 10 minutes left in the game.
UMD will look to bounce back against Northern Michigan (1-2-0) this Sunday (Sept. 11) at 1:00p.m. The Bulldogs will open up their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference campaign at home against St. Could State next Tuesday (Sept. 13).
