UMD GETS FIRST HOME WIN THIS SEASON AGAINST NORTHERN MICHIGAN

The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs outlasted a late push by the Northern Michigan Wildcats en route to a 2-1 victory.

UMD (2-1-0) took on Northern Michigan (1-4-0) Sunday afternoon looking to win its first home game of the season. The Wildcats went into the game on a three-game losing streak, where they were outscored 9-2 and shutout twice.

With seconds to go in the first half, the Bulldogs found the back of the net thanks to sophomore forward Destiny Schmitz and her first career goal for UMD.  Junior goalkeeper Jordan Melby patrolled the posts for the second time this season, collecting six saves on her way to her fifth career win as a Bulldog.

"I think we were prepared to play," said head coach Greg Cane. "[We] Took some lessons from the match on Friday where we needed to be better, did that today, used a lot of players, and I think that was a big part of the win."

With less than 13 minutes to play in the game, junior defender Skye Finley put the Bulldogs up 2-0 with her first goal of the season. A late push by Northern Michigan, which included a goal from senior midfielder Carmen Villarruel at 81:18, would fall short.

Freshman midfielders Nan Glinsek and Emma Spooner both made their debut for UMD in the second half.

The Bulldogs will trek to St. Cloud State (1-2-0) on Tuesday (Sept. 13) where they will open their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference campaign. Kickoff will be at 7:00p.m.
