BULLDOGS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO WAYNE STATE AT THE BUZZER

The University of Minnesota Duluth has become all too familiar with finishes like this one. With just over four seconds to play, sophomore guard Vance Janssen of Wayne State (Neb.) College drove the length of the court and netted a layup to send the visitors home with a victory, 79-77.

UMD held a six point lead with 2:54 remaining, but the Wildcats scored seven straight points over the next minute to grab a 73-72 advantage. With Wayne State clinging to a 77-75 lead, junior forward Jake Wilson banked home an off-balance layup to tie the game with seconds to play.

The Bulldogs scored on 50.9 percent of their field goal attempts and knocked down 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from three. Wayne State shot just a shade below UMD, concluding the night at a 50 percent clip (27-for-54). As head coach Matt Bowen noted after the game, free throws would prove to be the downfall of the Bulldogs, who shot just 45.8 percent (10-of-19) from the charity stripe.

Five UMD players notched double-digit points in the loss, led by 13 points from junior guard Kyle Schalow and freshman guard Logan Rohrscheib. Sophomore guard Cody Tomlinson capped off a stellar weekend with 12 points, including 2-of-2 from the three-point line. Tomlinson made good on all six three-point attempts over the two games. In the paint, senior forward Charles Benson put together another solid performance, scoring eight points and collection 10 rebounds while adding a pair of assists and a block.

For Wayne State, sophomore guard Kendall Jacks led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting.

The Bulldogs will begin a four-game road stretch next weekend as they face Minnesota State University, Mankato on Feb. 3.
