In a game that remained within seven points for over 32 minutes, the University of Minnesota Duluth once again coming up just a few points short of a victory, this time against Minnesota State University.
After the Mavericks quickly stormed out to a 10-0 lead, UMD remained poised and pushed the deficit down to just three points with a 7-0 run of its own. With 4:06 remaining in the first half and the game deadlocked at 17 apiece, freshman guard
Logan Rohrscheib knocked down a three-pointer to capture the first lead of the night for the Bulldogs. UMD led for the remainder of the half, taking a 25-22 lead into halftime.
Minnesota State once again began a half with a hot start -- regaining the lead within the first minute thanks to five quick points from sophomore guard Joey Witthus. The Bulldog offense down the stretch proved to be the downfall, as the visitors scored just four points in the final five minutes, including a 3:10 stretch without a point. UMD pulled within two with 1:13 to play, but free throws ultimately sealed the deal for the Mavericks, walking away with a 56-51 victory.
A trio of Bulldogs notched double-digit points -- junior forward
Jake Wilson (14), freshman forward
Luke Harris (13), and Rohrscheib (13). UMD stuck with a thin bench Friday night, as just seven players saw action while junior guard
Kyle Schalow and Rohrscheib each were on the court for all but one minute. The Bulldogs shot 35.3 percent from the floor (18-of-51) as compared to Minnesota State's 41.5 percent (22-of-53).
UMD will return to the court tomorrow evening in the hopes of ending a nine-game skid. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn. as the Bulldogs do battle with Concordia University-St. Paul.
