CONVERY AND THE BULLDOGS OUTDUEL BEMIDJI STATE 3-2

On Friday afternoon, less was finally more for the Bulldogs.

The University of Minnesota Duluth women's hockey team outscored Bemidji State University 3-2, despite the Beavers outshooting the Bulldogs 45-22 at the Sanford Center in Bemidji, Minn.  The win breaks UMD's six-game losing streak in which the Bulldogs outshot every opponent they played, but could not catch a break in the win column.

Jalyn Elmes — who now ranks fourth among all WCHA defensemen in scoring — put UMD on the board at 10:43 of the opening period, and was assisted by senior defenseman Catherine Daoust and freshman forward Ashton Bell.  Bell and Elmes connected again with just 16 seconds remaining in the period, with Bell getting the goal and Elmes the assist to put UMD 2-0 after the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs opened the second period with a tipped goal by freshman Naomi Rogge off a shot by — who else — Elmes, just 31 seconds into the stanza for the 3-0 lead.  BSU finally responded at the 3:59 mark on a goal by Emily Bergland, and then made it a 3-2 game at 10:29 of the second period with a power play goal from Haley Mack.

UMD's senior goaltender Jessica Convery took care of the Beavers from there, stonewalling an offense that outshot the Bulldogs 15-7 in the third period and swarmed Convery at times.  In all, Convery made 43 saves in her third win of the season.

With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 3-6-0 overall and 1-4 in league play.  UMD also jumps into a tie for fourth place with St. Cloud State in the WCHA.

The Bulldogs will attempt the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at the Sanford Center.  Game-time is set for 3:07 p.m.

BULLDOG NOTES:  Of the eight points notched by Bulldogs Friday, seven came from underclassmen (sophomores and freshmen) … with three points Friday, Jalyn Elmes now leads UMD in scoring with three goals and five assists for eight points in nine games … Both Naomi Rogge and Ashton Bell have a team-high four goals for UMD so far this season … UMD is now 67-12-4 against the Beavers all-time, and are unbeaten in their last seven games against BSU since the first round of the WCHA playoffs Feb. 26-27 of 2016.
