NO COMEBACK RALLY THIS TIME FOR UMD IN 1-0 LOSS TO MINOT STATE

A goal by midfielder Sofia Lewis at 43:08 would be the only tally of the night as Minot State University blanked the University of Minnesota Duluth for only the second time this season under the lights Friday in Minot, N.D. The Beavers leaped over the Bulldogs in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference standings with the 1-0 victory.

It was a physically rough match as both teams drew a yellow card and combined for 17 fouls. UMD attempted to pull the comeback card for a second time in as many matches but were unable to find the back of the net. Both clubs registered six shots on goal with the Bulldogs collecting two more shots than the Beavers.

UMD (7-3-1, 4-3-1 NSIC) threw out all the stops in the end to tie it. Head coach Greg Cane used multiple subs and different formations to spark a rally that would cease to exist. The collective playing streak of senior defender Emily Fleissner came to an end in the 74th minute. Fleissner was subbed for another attacker as UMD switched to only three defenders on the backline trying to gain the equalizer. Fleissner played all 938 minutes leading up to the game before she finally took a breather on the bench. The Duluth, Minn., native compiled the most minutes by a Bulldog defender last year with 1,551 minutes.

The Minot State (6-4-1, 5-3 NSIC) defense and goalie Erin Rafferty did just enough to stop all six shots on goal including the final four shot attempts of the game. Junior forward Destiny Schmitz made her second career start after her blazing scoring clinic last weekend. Schmitz, who tallied all three goals last week, was shutout this round but registered a game-high three shots on net.

Junior goalkeeper Sisley Ng made five saves for UMD. Ng has started the last five games since being spelled for in the 2-2 draw against Concordia University, St. Paul. Unfortunately, a bad bounce off a cross gave Lewis the only opening she needed. Beaver forward Haley Berryman played a crosser from the right side. Ng went out to corral the cross but got caught up in traffic as the ball deflected off her right to Lewis. With Ng out to stop the cross, Lewis was left with an empty goal to shoot at.

UMD returns to James S. Malosky Stadium this Sunday for a showdown against the University of Mary. That game will host the Animal Allies Humane Society as part of the Kicks for Causes campaign. First kick of that contest is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
