Jared Thomas is one of only four current Bulldogs who know what it's like to lose to Miami University. Friday night in Oxford, Ohio, he did his part to keep it to four.
The University of Minnesota Duluth senior center potted a pair of goals, including the game-winner with five minutes to go in the third period, to spark the Bulldogs to a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference win and extend their unbeaten streak against the RedHawks to 11 games. Sophomore goaltender
Hunter Shepard finished with 28 saves (15 of which came in the final period of play) for the No. 14 Bulldogs, who are now 9-0-2 versus the RedHawks since falling 4-3 in overtime back on Feb. 21, 2015 in Oxford. Rookie defenseman
Scott Perunovich also scored once and assisted on Thomas' first goal as UMD improved to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3-0-0 in the NCHC.
Thomas, who came into the night with five points (all assists) on the year, struck at 14:33 of the first period and that 1-0 Bulldog lead held up until Carson Meyer snapped Miami's 0-for-18 power play funk 3:46 into the third period. Thomas put UMD up for good on a one-timer off a feed from rookie defenseman
Dylan Samberg at 14:51 of the third and Perunovich tacked on an insurance goal 76 seconds later. UMD was outshot in the third period 15-6 and 29-19 for the game (marking only the second time this season the opposition has held the upper hand in shots).
The two teams will close out the two-game NCHC series Saturday night.
